Industrial information networks

A feature of modern production is the close interaction of technological (production) and information flows.

Each level has its own characteristics in terms of the type of information transmitted, the transmission medium, its volume, the acceptable waiting time and delivery of data, information security requirements, and so on.

According to the characteristic tasks performed, such systems are divided into the following levels :

  • The lower level is a component of the automated process control system, which includes all sensors, devices, actuators, pumps, etc. That is, all mechanical equipment used at the enterprise and directly performing the main tasks in accordance with the production direction of activity.
  • The middle level is the level of implementation of software and hardware to ensure control of lower-level equipment, that is, various controllers, computers that have the necessary software for control, collection and intermediate storage of information coming from lower-level equipment.
  • The upper level is the level of the industrial network (server), through which the entire technological process itself is directly controlled, i.e. both the lower and middle level equipment. The upper level is also responsible for storing all data received during operation, and this also includes all operator and dispatch stations that visualize the current state of the entire technological process and provide full control over the latter.

The figure shows a generalized network structure for organizing information exchange at a hypothetical industrial enterprise.

In accordance with the listed tasks, appropriate network technologies are used for different levels.

For the top level, Ethernet and TCP/IP protocol are most widely used.

At the middle and lower levels, industrial networks (fieldbus) are used, which include Profibus, CANbus, Modbus and many others.

At present, data registered at all levels of the automated process control system play a major role. The requirements imposed by consumers of this information are becoming increasingly stringent in terms of volume, speed and reliability of data acquisition, so the issues of providing communications are becoming high priority. The class of compatible remote data collection modules I-7000, ADAM-4000, NuDAM-6000, interacting via the RS-485 interface, is used as the element base of such systems.

The I-7000 series of remote input/output modules from ICP DAS provide an inexpensive, flexible and effective solution for a wide range of industrial and laboratory tasks. The products of this series are designed for process control, integration into process equipment, remote collection and processing of information, can be used as communication devices, etc. The controllers are included in the State Register of Measuring Instruments and are approved for use in the Russian Federation.
